CPS Energy Drives Sustainable Energy Initiatives with New Battery Storage RFP
CPS Energy, the largest public power and natural gas provider in the United States, takes a significant step towards enhancing its energy sustainability with the issuance of a Request for Proposal (RFP) aimed at acquiring up to 500 megawatts (MW) of additional battery storage capacity. This initiative aligns with the company’s Vision 2027 Generation Plan, which emphasizes the importance of providing affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy to the greater San Antonio community. President and CEO Rudy D. Garza highlights that this move not only strengthens the company’s energy infrastructure but also plays a vital role in advancing the City of San Antonio's Climate Action & Adaptation Plan (CAAP), which targets carbon neutrality by 2050.
The RFP is set to increase CPS Energy's operational or contracted battery storage capacity to over 1,000 MW. Currently, the company has 50 MW of battery storage online and an additional 470 MW in development, expected to be operational by 2026. This strategic expansion of energy storage capacity is crucial for the integration of renewable energy sources, enabling CPS Energy to enhance grid reliability and support the transition towards cleaner energy alternatives. By actively seeking proposals through the Power Advocate Portal, CPS Energy aims to engage a diverse range of suppliers who can contribute to this transformative project, with a submission deadline of January 30, 2026.
CPS Energy’s commitment to sustainability and community engagement underscores its pivotal role in the region. Serving over 970,000 electric and 390,000 natural gas customers, the company maintains some of the lowest energy bills among major U.S. cities and has generated $10.1 billion in revenue for San Antonio since its inception in 1860. Furthermore, CPS Energy is dedicated to economic development and job creation, with its employees actively participating in community volunteer efforts. This holistic approach positions CPS Energy not just as a utility provider, but as a trusted partner invested in the long-term prosperity and environmental stewardship of the San Antonio area.
In addition to its battery storage initiative, CPS Energy continues to showcase its commitment to innovation and community service. The company’s efforts align with a growing trend in the energy sector towards integrating renewable energy solutions and improving energy efficiency for customers. As cities increasingly seek to meet ambitious climate goals, CPS Energy's proactive measures place it at the forefront of sustainable energy leadership in the United States.
