Ecopetrol Expands Renewable Energy Portfolio with Wind Autogeneración Acquisition
Ecopetrol S.A., Colombia’s largest company and a significant player in the integrated energy sector across the Americas, announces the successful acquisition of 100% of Wind Autogeneración S.A.S. from Enel S.A.S. This strategic move, approved by the company’s Board of Directors in December 2024, is a pivotal step in Ecopetrol’s ambition to enhance its renewable energy offerings. The acquisition aligns seamlessly with the company’s broader strategy to diversify its energy portfolio and reduce its carbon footprint, particularly through the Windpeshi project located in La Guajira, a region rich in renewable energy resources.
The Windpeshi project aims to achieve an installed capacity of 205 megawatts (MW) and is expected to generate an average of 1,006 gigawatt-hours (GWh) per year. This output is projected to account for approximately 8-9% of the energy needs of the Ecopetrol Group. With an investment of nearly $350 million planned from 2025 to 2027, the project is not only set to aid in cost optimization but also plays a critical role in Ecopetrol’s decarbonization efforts. By reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 4.8 million tons, the Windpeshi initiative highlights Ecopetrol's commitment to transitioning towards sustainable energy solutions while still maintaining its stronghold in hydrocarbon production.
Construction for the Windpeshi project is scheduled to resume by the end of 2025, with operations anticipated to commence before 2028. Ecopetrol emphasizes the importance of engaging experienced contractors and fostering intercultural dialogue with the Wayuu indigenous communities in the region. This marks a significant milestone as it is Ecopetrol’s first fully self-developed non-conventional renewable energy project in La Guajira, showcasing the company’s dedication to leading Colombia’s energy transition while continuing to play a vital role in the country’s hydrocarbon and petrochemical sectors.
In addition to the Wind Autogeneración acquisition, Ecopetrol’s ongoing projects highlight its commitment to sustainability. The company’s strategy not only focuses on expanding its renewable portfolio but also on enhancing its operational efficiency across all energy sectors. This dual approach positions Ecopetrol as a key player in the region’s energy landscape, balancing traditional energy production with innovative, sustainable practices.
As Ecopetrol integrates Wind Autogeneración S.A.S. into its operations, the company stands at the forefront of Colombia’s energy transition, combining modern renewable initiatives with extensive hydrocarbon production. This strategic direction is set to redefine the future of energy in Colombia, emphasizing Ecopetrol’s role in promoting sustainable development while meeting the energy demands of the nation.
