MDA Space Ltd. to Lead Lunar Utility Vehicle Study for Canadian Space Agency

MDA Space Ltd., a key player in the global space industry, embarks on a significant initiative following its selection by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) to conduct an early-phase study for the proposed Lunar Utility Vehicle (LUV). This project aims to define critical aspects of lunar logistics and mobility, focusing on mission architecture, technology options, and risk assessments. Collaborating with notable institutions such as the Centre de Technologies Avancées BRP – Université de Sherbrooke (CTA) and the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS), MDA Space is poised to leverage its extensive experience in space robotics to enhance Canada’s capabilities in lunar exploration.

The study builds on MDA Space's successful autonomous lunar surface demonstration conducted in December 2024, which showcased the company's expertise in developing innovative, scalable solutions for space operations. A central feature of the LUV initiative is the integration of MDA SKYMAKER™, a modular suite of space robotics originating from the renowned Canadarm technology. This technology is expected to provide the necessary autonomy and adaptability for a wide range of lunar applications, addressing the unique challenges faced in extraterrestrial environments. As MDA Space advances in this project, it aims to lay the groundwork for sustainable human presence on the Moon.

Mike Greenley, CEO of MDA Space, expresses his pride in collaborating with CTA and UTIAS, emphasizing the significance of this study for Canada’s role in space exploration. He underscores the importance of establishing logistics that will support long-term human operations on the Moon. Meanwhile, Éric Charlebois of CTA highlights the institution's expertise in rugged vehicle engineering, critical for overcoming lunar mobility challenges. Dr. Tim Barfoot from UTIAS points out the necessity for advanced autonomy in lunar vehicles, which is essential for enabling reliable, self-directed operations on the Moon’s surface.

In addition to this exciting endeavor, MDA Space’s commitment to innovation is evident through its history of over 55 years and more than 450 missions. The company continues to bridge the gap between proven technologies and future possibilities in the space sector, reinforcing its position as a leader in space robotics and satellite systems. As the lunar exploration landscape evolves, MDA Space remains at the forefront, ready to contribute to humanity's next steps beyond Earth.

The collaboration with CSA and other partners not only strengthens Canada’s position in the global space industry but also aligns with broader international efforts to explore and utilize lunar resources. As countries worldwide invest in lunar missions, MDA Space is well-equipped to provide the technological advancements necessary for sustainable exploration and eventual colonization of the Moon.
