NFI Group Inc. Partners with Suffolk County Transit for Fleet Modernization
In a significant advancement for public transportation, NFI Group Inc. and its subsidiary, New Flyer of America Inc., secure a major contract with Suffolk County Transit to modernize its bus fleet. This deal encompasses the procurement of up to 132 next-generation buses, which includes 92 Xcelsior® hybrid-electric 35-foot buses and 40 Xcelsior CHARGE NG™ battery-electric 40-foot buses. The initiative represents a strategic commitment to enhancing energy diversity and operational efficiency within the county's transit operations, ultimately aiming to improve service reliability and passenger comfort.
Suffolk County Transit, which operates a comprehensive network across New York, seeks to bolster its fleet to address the challenges of aging vehicles and rising operational costs. The new buses will complement an existing fleet of 73 New Flyer hybrid-electric buses, reinforcing the longstanding partnership between the county and New Flyer. This collaboration underscores a shared dedication to American manufacturing and job creation while positioning NFI as a leader in sustainable transit solutions. Chris Stoddart, President of North American Bus and Coach at NFI, highlights the operational savings and consistent performance expected from their common Xcelsior platform, which facilitates shared parts and training for both hybrid and battery-electric models.
The five-year agreement places NFI Group at the forefront of the transition toward cleaner public transportation. With nearly 9,000 employees globally and a portfolio that includes diverse sustainable drive systems, NFI continues to respond to evolving urban mobility demands. The introduction of these next-generation buses not only enhances Suffolk County Transit’s operational capabilities but also reinforces NFI's reputation for reliable performance in public transit solutions. As transit agencies face challenges with outdated fleets, NFI's innovative approach to sustainable transportation positions it as a key player in the future of mass mobility.
In addition to manufacturing advanced vehicles, New Flyer provides a comprehensive suite of services that includes parts supply, infrastructure planning, workforce development, and financing. This holistic approach ensures that transit agencies are well-equipped to thrive in an increasingly complex transportation landscape. The order from Suffolk County Transit not only reinforces NFI’s manufacturing capabilities but also emphasizes its commitment to supporting transit agencies in their quest for modernization and sustainability.
