Enhancing Employee Benefits Understanding Through Personalized Education

Optavise has unveiled its 2025 Healthcare Literacy Report, emphasizing the transformative impact of personalized education on employees' comprehension of workplace benefits. The survey, which captures insights from 2,041 U.S. workers holding employer-sponsored health insurance, reveals a notable increase in employee satisfaction with health plans, rising to 74% from last year’s 69%. This upward trend signals that tailored educational approaches significantly enhance workers' understanding of their health benefits, with 75% of respondents indicating they now grasp their plans—an improvement from 68% in the previous year. These findings underscore the importance of effective communication in employee benefits programs.

Despite these positive trends, the report highlights ongoing challenges in navigating benefits. A concerning one-quarter of employees still depend on self-guided resources for information about their health plans. Among this group, only 65% express confidence in their understanding, starkly contrasting with the 82% confidence rate among those who receive guidance from HR or third-party experts. This disparity points to the critical need for companies like CNO Financial Group to enhance their employee education strategies, ensuring that workers have access to reliable resources and expert support that can foster greater confidence in managing their health benefits.

Accessibility emerges as a key factor influencing employee satisfaction. The report notes that 87% of satisfied employees find it easy to access their benefits, while 58% who encounter difficulties in accessing information lack confidence in their understanding of their plans. Joshua Madson, Head of Worksite Strategy at Optavise, emphasizes the significance of human connection in benefits education, asserting that personal interactions facilitate deeper understanding and lead to better healthcare decisions. As healthcare costs continue to rise, with 55% of employees avoiding doctor visits due to cost concerns, employers are urged to enhance transparency in benefit offerings to empower their workforce in making informed choices.

In addition to the findings on healthcare literacy, the report sheds light on a growing trend among employees towards proactive financial management in healthcare. A notable 44% of respondents frequently compare treatment costs, which indicates an increasing awareness of healthcare expenses. This trend signals an opportunity for companies to provide clearer cost information and resources that can aid employees in navigating their choices effectively. Overall, the 2025 Healthcare Literacy Report serves as a crucial reminder of the essential role that personalized education and accessible resources play in improving employee satisfaction and fostering a more informed workforce.
