Portland General Electric Enhances Energy Resilience with New Battery Storage Facilities
Portland General Electric (PGE) marks a significant advancement in energy management by successfully launching three new utility-scale battery energy storage systems in the Portland metro area. These installations, which collectively add 475 megawatts (MW) and over 1.9 gigawatt hours (GWh) of dispatchable capacity, are strategically located in North Portland, Troutdale, and Hillsboro. With the ability to supply power to approximately 300,000 homes for up to four hours during peak demand, these systems play a crucial role in balancing energy supply and demand in a region that increasingly relies on renewable energy sources.
The new lithium-ion battery systems enhance PGE’s generation portfolio, providing greater flexibility and reliability in electricity supply. Darrington Outama, PGE’s Senior Director of Energy Supply, highlights that these facilities are pivotal in stabilizing energy delivery, especially during times of adverse weather or unexpected demand surges. In addition to these, PGE's own Constable facility, which adds another 75 MW of capacity, further strengthens the region's energy storage capabilities.
