Georgia Power, in partnership with Mitsubishi Power, initiates a significant upgrade at Plant Yates in Coweta County with the arrival of the first of three advanced natural gas combustion turbines. This development marks a pivotal moment for the company, being its first new natural gas project in over a decade. The turbine, which is an impressive assembly weighing nearly 350 tons and measuring 50 feet long by 18 feet wide, is designed to bolster the company’s capacity to meet the increasing energy demands in Georgia. The delivery of this turbine, accomplished via rail and truck, signifies Georgia Power’s commitment to modernizing its energy infrastructure.
The new turbines will utilize Mitsubishi Power's cutting-edge M501JAC combustion technology, which promises to enhance efficiency and reliability in electricity generation. Once fully operational, these units are projected to contribute an additional 1,300 megawatts (MW) of power to Georgia Power's existing fleet. This upgrade is particularly significant as Plant Yates, which has been operational since 1950, previously transitioned from coal to natural gas, decommissioning five out of its seven coal-fired units in 2014.
