BorgWarner moves into data-center power with modular turbine deal
Modular turbine system targets gigawatt-scale AI data centers
BorgWarner is signing a Master Supply Agreement with TurboCell, a subsidiary of Endeavour, to deliver a highly modular turbine generator system aimed at meeting escalating power needs for artificial intelligence campuses and microgrids. The Auburn Hills-based supplier frames the product as a strategic entry into the data-center market after more than three years of joint development with TurboCell, and says the design supports both backup and prime-power roles at gigawatt scale.
The turbine system incorporates advanced controls and fast dynamic-response capability to manage power transients and grid peaks associated with AI workloads. BorgWarner says the architecture is highly modular to permit rapid installation and staged capacity additions so operators can scale in line with evolving demand. The equipment is being developed to accept multiple fuel types — natural gas, propane, diesel and hydrogen — and to meet California Air Resources Board standards or potentially stricter future emissions limits.
BorgWarner emphasizes that the project builds on its core strengths in turbocharging, thermal management, power electronics, high-speed rotating electric systems and software controls, and that it plans to capture roughly 65% of the turbine-generator system content through its automotive supply base and manufacturing footprint. Production is slated to begin in 2027, and the company positions the offering as a high-power alternative to traditional generation for AI campuses and distributed microgrids, aiming to reduce customer time-to-operation at scale.
Three-year collaboration underpins product readiness
The agreement follows an extended collaboration between BorgWarner and TurboCell that the companies say accelerates technical integration between data-center infrastructure needs and automotive-scale manufacturing. BorgWarner’s vertical-integration approach is intended to support volume production and consistent quality as deployments expand toward gigawatt-class requirements.
Industry context: fuel flexibility, emissions and speed to market
The move highlights an industry shift as suppliers adapt power solutions to the unique load profiles and rapid growth of AI facilities. Regulatory compliance, fuel flexibility and rapid deployability are emerging as key differentiators for infrastructure vendors seeking contracts from hyperscalers and campus operators.
