Piketon expansion to be led by Fluor as EPC
Centrus Energy says its subsidiary American Centrifuge Operating LLC is partnering with Fluor Corp to act as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for a multi‑billion‑dollar expansion of uranium enrichment capacity at Piketon, Ohio. The agreement pairs Centrus’s recently launched centrifuge manufacturing with Fluor’s decades of nuclear construction experience to accelerate large‑scale deployment, engineering and design, and procurement of critical materials. Centrus describes the deal as a critical milestone as it moves from development into commercial production.
The project targets increased production of low‑enriched uranium (LEU) to address Centrus’s commercial LEU enrichment contingent backlog of about $2.3 billion and adds planned capacity to produce 12 metric tons per year of high‑assay low‑enriched uranium (HALEU) for next‑generation reactors. Centrus says Fluor will oversee supply‑chain management, site construction oversight and commissioning support to shorten schedules and reduce technical risk. Centrus President and CEO Amir Vexler and Senior Vice President Patrick Brown say the collaboration will help move the company “full‑speed ahead” now that centrifuge manufacturing is underway.
Executives frame the alliance as advancing both energy and national security objectives. Centrus highlights its position as the only production‑ready option for certain national security enrichment missions and notes a National Nuclear Security Administration notification of intent to sole‑source some activities to the company. Fluor’s Al Collins says the partnership “fully supports restoration of U.S. enrichment capability,” and Centrus anticipates the EPC role will reinforce domestic supply chains and create local jobs in Pike County, Ohio.
Government awards and company investments
Recent federal and company milestones buttress the expansion. The Department of Energy selects Centrus for a roughly $900 million HALEU task order in early January 2026, and Centrus announces more than $560 million in investment to transition its advanced centrifuge factory to production scale.
Operational and market positioning
Centrus is emphasizing the combined commercial and strategic rationale for the Piketon buildout, aiming to meet growing reactor demand while restoring large‑scale U.S. uranium enrichment capability. The Fluor alliance is presented as the key execution partner to translate manufacturing progress into on‑site capacity and commissioning.
