Cigna’s Wellness In Motion Delivers School-Based Preventive Care in Oakland
Cigna Healthcare brings its Wellness In Motion mobile clinic to Burckhalter Elementary School in Oakland as part of the Vincent Country Safe Zone Activity Day Presented by Cigna Healthcare, delivering free health screenings, skin cancer checks and on-site eye exams with glasses for students. The services sit alongside wellness game stations run by Cigna staff, integrating preventive health checks with activity programming for parents, faculty and community members during the event. The intervention forms part of a targeted outreach effort to reduce barriers to basic screenings and vision care for families who may not routinely access such services.
Cigna uses the school-based setting to extend primary prevention into the community, aligning clinical services with sports and nutrition activities to address physical and preventive needs in a single visit. By pairing clinical screenings with child-focused programming, Cigna positions the mobile clinic as a bridge between health services and educational settings, supporting continuing care pathways for follow-up and referrals. The model reflects an emphasis on early detection and access, particularly for underserved populations, by meeting families where they are during a high-attendance community event.
The presence of Cigna at the event also highlights a multi-sector partnership approach that leverages corporate capacity, nonprofit organizers and sports-league visibility to amplify community health outreach. During Super Bowl week, the mobile clinic’s activities underscore how health insurers can integrate preventive services into broader community investments, using high-profile events to engage volunteers and local stakeholders and to promote sustained connections between schools and health providers.
Community event expands facilities and programming
Organizers mark the ninth annual Dreams Grow Here event with a ribbon-cutting for permanent campus upgrades — a new soccer turf, an adaptive agility mat, a stocked on-site food pantry and a community mural — while more than 200 Pre-K through fifth-grade students take part in sports, wellness and educational activities, including NFL FLAG. Over nine years the program reports reaching more than 4,800 students and 640 educators and contributing nearly $745,000 in funding and resources to participating schools.
Scaling the model through partnerships
Love Thy Neighbor CDC and partners, including NFL figures and corporate sponsors, plan to replicate and scale the model in future host cities, leveraging sponsorships and local stakeholders to sustain investments in school infrastructure, athletic programming and health services. Organizers say the combined focus on physical, emotional, academic and creative support aims to create environments where children feel seen and better positioned to pursue long-term opportunities.
