GE Aerospace transforms Singapore site into automated MRO and AI hub
GE Aerospace is launching a multi-year plan of up to $300 million to expand engine repair capabilities in Singapore, aiming to modernize maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) operations across the Asia-Pacific region. The five-year programme, running from 2025 to 2029, introduces advanced automation, digitization and AI-enabled inspection to accelerate turnarounds and standardize repairs under the company’s FLIGHT DECK fundamentals for Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost (SQDC). GE says the investment converts the Singapore facility into a Premier service centre for APAC by broadening its engine component portfolio and adding a new Module Repair capability for CFM LEAP-1A/1B high-pressure turbines.
At the centre of the expansion is an AI Centre of Excellence that GE is establishing to develop MRO and on-wing support tools using a data fabric ecosystem. GE describes plans for Automated Digital Inspection and Predictive Maintenance solutions that shorten inspection times, increase throughput and make repair timing and cost more predictable for airlines and maintenance partners. Mohamed Ali, president and CEO of Commercial Engines & Services at GE Aerospace, frames the project as a continuation of a “thriving partnership” with the Singapore Economic Development Board that will introduce breakthrough MRO capabilities to the region.
The programme also includes a phased deployment of modern tooling and facility upgrades alongside workforce retraining to embed the new technologies and processes. GE says these steps will lower lifecycle costs and strengthen on-wing support while maintaining safety and quality standards. Iain Rodger, managing director of GE Aerospace Component Repair Singapore, stresses the immediate customer benefits from improved capabilities and faster service delivery as the plant ramps up new operations.
New repair and coating capabilities
GE is adding facilities for REACH-compliant coatings and industrialized coating and anti-corrosion coating repair, expanding the scope of component treatments available in Singapore and reducing the need to route work elsewhere in the region.
Economic and workforce impact
The expansion is supported by the Singapore Economic Development Board, which says the move reinforces the city-state’s role as a global aerospace hub. GE anticipates creating skilled, long-term employment through retraining and new technical roles as the centre adopts automation and AI systems.
