HEICO’s VPT unveils high‑efficiency point‑of‑load converter for NewSpace
VSCPL1210SG designed for small LEO satellites and NASA Class D missions
VPT, a HEICO company, is rolling out the VSCPL1210SG, the first point‑of‑load DC–DC converter in its VSC Series of space‑grade commercial off‑the‑shelf power supplies aimed at small satellites in low Earth orbit and NASA Class D missions. The surface‑mount unit delivers up to 10 A of output current with peak efficiency of 95%, operates from 4.5–13.2 V input and offers an adjustable 0.8–5.0 V output. VPT positions the device as part of a complete power‑conversion suite that includes isolated DC–DC converters, point‑of‑load converters and EMI filters for NewSpace platforms where cost and guaranteed performance are critical.
The VSCPL1210SG is radiation tested to 42 MeV/mg/cm² with no destructive single‑event effects (SEGR, SEB, SEL) and is tested to 40 krad(Si) with a guaranteed total ionizing dose (TID) of 30 krad(Si) under VPT’s in‑house radiation hardness assurance plan. It maintains reliable operation across a −55 °C to +105 °C range with no power derating, and proprietary packaging supports dual‑side heatsinking and low outgassing for space environments. The design supports reflow soldering to simplify board‑level integration, which VPT highlights as important for rapid satellite assembly and standardised subsystem integration.
Brandon Witcher, principal design engineer at VPT, says the converter is engineered to deliver “high efficiency, tight regulation, and simplified board‑level integration while maintaining the radiation tolerance required for LEO environments.” VPT plans two additional point‑of‑load models later in the year — the VSCPL0510SG (10 A) and VSCPL1220SG (20 A) — and clarifies that the VSC Series complements its hermetic hybrid SVL Series rad‑hard products available on Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) SMDs.
Manufacturing, certification and ordering
The VSCPL1210SG is built in an ISO9001, J‑STD‑001 and IPC‑A‑610 certified facility and is available to order immediately, subject to applicable U.S. export license restrictions. VPT encourages customers to request qualification data and radiation test reports and offers application support and lead‑time information through its sales channels.
Industry implications
By expanding its NewSpace power portfolio with a high‑efficiency, radiation‑tolerant point‑of‑load converter, HEICO’s VPT is addressing growing demand from smallsat integrators for compact, cost‑effective power subsystems that simplify thermal and board‑level design while meeting mission assurance requirements.
