Smartkem Unveils Revolutionary MicroLED Technology at IDW Conference
Smartkem, Inc., a Manchester-based leader in organic semiconductor technology, prepares to showcase its groundbreaking MicroLED-in-Package (MiP4) Backlight at the upcoming 32nd International Display Workshops (IDW) Conference, set to take place in Hiroshima, Japan, from December 3-5, 2025. The presentation, led by Steven Tsai, Smartkem's Head of Technology Transfer, is scheduled for December 4 at 16:40 local time, where he will address the transformative capabilities of the MiP4 technology. This presentation is anticipated to attract significant attention from industry stakeholders, given the increasing demand for innovative display solutions.
The MiP4 backlight represents a significant leap forward in display technology, particularly for the Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) sector, which currently dominates approximately 65% of the global display market. Smartkem’s approach utilizes a low-temperature, 'chip-first' MicroLED architecture that not only simplifies production processes but also enhances yield management and overall display performance. By integrating four sub-85um sized MicroLEDs in series through a proprietary Redistribution Layer (RDL), the MiP4 achieves native 12V operation. This design innovation dramatically reduces power loss and the complexity associated with surface mount technology (SMT), positioning Smartkem's offering as a highly efficient alternative to traditional backlighting systems.
One of the standout features of the MiP4 backlight is its impressive peak brightness of 34,047 nits in a 400-zone configuration, alongside an 84% reduction in gallium nitride (GaN) usage compared to conventional Chip-On-Board (COB) designs. This remarkable performance, coupled with the efficiency gains, underscores Smartkem's commitment to advancing display technologies that meet the evolving needs of the industry. Throughout the IDW Conference, Steven Tsai will also be available for one-on-one meetings, providing a platform for potential partnerships and collaborations that could further enhance the adoption of Smartkem’s innovative solutions.
In addition to the MiP4 presentation, the IDW Conference serves as a critical venue for networking and knowledge exchange among display technology professionals. Attendees can expect a variety of discussions focused on the latest trends and advancements in display technologies, making it an invaluable event for those invested in the future of this rapidly evolving industry. Smartkem’s participation not only highlights its innovative contributions but also reinforces its strategic positioning within the competitive landscape of display technology.
