Smartkem Pioneers MicroLED Innovation at International Display Workshops
Smartkem, Inc., a Manchester-based leader in organic semiconductor technology, is set to unveil its groundbreaking MicroLED-in-Package (MiP4) Backlight at the upcoming 32nd International Display Workshops (IDW) Conference in Hiroshima, Japan, scheduled for December 4, 2025. The company’s Head of Technology Transfer, Steven Tsai, will present the innovative backlight solution in a session titled “From Chip to Panel: High-Brightness, Low-Power Mini-LED Backlighting via MicroLED-in-Package (MiP4)” at 16:40 local time. This event is anticipated to capture significant attention as it addresses key challenges in the display industry.
The MiP4 backlight, which was first introduced at Touch Taiwan in April 2025 and showcased at Display Week in May 2025, is considered a potential game changer for the global display market. It features a low-temperature, 'chip-first' MicroLED architecture that streamlines production processes, enhances yield management, and improves overall display performance. This development aims to significantly impact the Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) sector, which currently represents approximately 65% of the global display market. By integrating four sub-85um sized MicroLEDs in series through a proprietary Redistribution Layer (RDL), the MiP4 structure enables native 12V operation, leading to reduced power loss and simplified surface mount technology (SMT).
One of the most impressive attributes of the MiP4 backlight is its peak brightness of 34,047 nits in a 400-zone backlight configuration, which sets a new standard for display brightness. Additionally, the MiP4 technology minimizes the use of gallium nitride (GaN) by an impressive 84% compared to traditional Chip-On-Board (COB) designs, thereby promoting a more sustainable approach in semiconductor manufacturing. Throughout the IDW Conference, Steven Tsai will be available for one-on-one meetings, offering insights into the capabilities and future applications of Smartkem's 12.3-inch MicroLED-in-Package backlight.
In addition to its innovative product offerings, Smartkem’s presence at the IDW Conference highlights the growing emphasis on advanced display technologies within the industry. As global demand for high-quality displays continues to rise, companies like Smartkem are at the forefront of developing solutions that meet both consumer expectations and environmental considerations. The MiP4 backlight is poised to not only enhance the visual experience for consumers but also to set the stage for further advancements in display technology.
As Smartkem prepares for its presentation, industry observers remain keenly interested in how the MiP4 backlight will influence the competitive landscape of the semiconductor and display markets. The company's commitment to innovation and sustainability positions it as a key player in the future of display technologies.
