Ingevity and CHASM: Pioneering Localized Supply Chains for Advanced Battery Materials
Ingevity Corporation's recent licensing agreement with CHASM Advanced Materials Inc. marks a pivotal development in the North American battery materials landscape. Announced on November 11, 2025, the agreement allows Ingevity to manufacture CHASM’s patented NTeC®-E carbon nanotube (CNT) conductive additives specifically for battery applications in North America and select European markets. This collaboration builds on a joint development agreement from February 2024, reinforcing a shared commitment to establishing secure, localized supply chains that cater to the burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) gigafactory ecosystem.
The NTeC®-E CNT additives, validated through rigorous testing in Ingevity's battery laboratories and by third-party assessments, offer significant advantages for lithium-ion cathodes and silicon anodes. These high-purity, high-performance CNT additives enhance conductivity, improve capacity retention at high charge rates, and extend cycle life. As manufacturers in North America and Europe increasingly seek cost-effective solutions, the seamless compatibility of NTeC®-E with various battery chemistries—including high-nickel cathodes and solid-state batteries—positions Ingevity and CHASM favorably within the competitive landscape of battery materials.
David Arthur, CEO and Co-founder of CHASM, highlights that this agreement represents a crucial advancement towards a reliable, regionally sourced supply of CNTs for the rapidly evolving EV battery sector. This initiative not only assists battery cell producers in attaining their performance and sustainability objectives but also mitigates reliance on overseas supply chains. Ingevity’s President and CEO, David Li, views this partnership as a testament to both companies' technological capabilities and underscores the importance of collaboration in enhancing battery technology and ensuring supply chain security.
In addition to the licensing arrangement, the partnership between Ingevity and CHASM signifies a broader trend within the battery materials industry towards localization. As the demand for electric vehicles surges, the need for innovative and efficient battery materials becomes increasingly critical. This collaboration is positioned to meet that demand while contributing to the overall sustainability goals of the industry.
The agreement also reflects a strategic response to the challenges posed by global supply chain disruptions. By investing in domestic manufacturing capabilities, Ingevity and CHASM are not only enhancing their competitive edge but also supporting the growth of the EV sector in North America and Europe. The establishment of local supply chains for advanced battery materials is likely to play a vital role in the transition towards a more sustainable and electrified future.
