Valentine's without the wait
Kroger is promoting an at-home "Surf and Turf" dinner aimed at customers who want a restaurant-quality Valentine's meal without a reservation. The retailer highlights meat and seafood counters, curated seasonings and on-demand delivery options to make a special evening simple and affordable for shoppers.
Kroger's 'Surf and Turf' date-night push
Kroger is rolling out curated product recommendations and cooking guidance to help customers assemble a romantic surf-and-turf plate at home, saying quality ingredients are the foundation of any romantic dinner. Carlo Baldan, Group Vice President of Fresh Merchandising at Kroger, says customers can rely on the chain's premium cuts and fresh selections at accessible price points. The company positions its Private Selection® cracked peppercorn and other seasonings as shortcuts to steakhouse flavor.
Kroger's culinary team gives practical tips that mirror chef techniques for tender, flavorful results. For steak, they advise shoppers to look for marbling and consider cuts such as ribeye, New York strip, filet mignon or sirloin, and to salt steaks 30–60 minutes before cooking to deepen seasoning and improve crust formation. A quick baste with garlic‑herb butter after cooking is recommended to finish steaks with a restaurant-style aroma.
For seafood, Kroger emphasises handling and portion guidance to ensure even cooking and tenderness. The company suggests solidly frozen lobster tails without heavy ice crystals and 4–6 oz tails for even cooking, and crab legs with intact shells and minimal ice buildup. Simple sides—roasted asparagus, garlic mashed potatoes or a citrus‑dressed salad—are proposed to complement the surf‑and‑turf plate and keep preparation manageable.
Food safety and in-store guidance
Kroger underscores food-safety practices, advising shoppers to thaw seafood safely, avoid temperature abuse and use a meat thermometer to reach desired doneness (for example 130–135°F for medium-rare steak). Store associates at meat and seafood counters are available to advise on cuts, weights and portions for two.
Delivery and convenience partnerships
To extend convenience beyond in-store pickup, Kroger is offering gift delivery for Valentine's meals through partners DoorDash and Uber Eats, positioning on-demand networks as a way to remove the need for a restaurant reservation and make February 14 "simple, special and memorable" for busy customers.
