Matson Leads Cargo Security Innovations Amid Increased Theft Concerns
Matson, Inc. takes a significant step in disrupting the intermodal cargo sector by launching a new security initiative aimed at combating rising theft incidents. Announced on March 2, 2026, the program is set to enhance cargo safety for international intermodal shipments, a critical service area for the company. This initiative, commencing in the second quarter of 2026, partners Matson with BNSF Railway and War-Lok to implement a dual-layered security system on the majority of its international containers. The enhancements will come at no additional costs to customers, positioning Matson as a leader in customer-focused security innovations.
The program primarily revolves around the deployment of War-Lok security devices on all international containers transported from Los Angeles to various destinations via the BNSF network, including prominent urban centers such as Chicago, Memphis, and Dallas. By integrating these advanced security devices, Matson aims to furnish its customers with peace of mind, crucial in a climate where cargo theft is increasingly prevalent. Notably, Matson will also arrange for containers to occupy the lower well of BNSF’s intermodal rail cars, enhancing security during transit. This strategic placement not only fortifies the physical security of shipments but also optimizes cargo transport logistics.
John Lauer, Matson's Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, articulates the company's ethos of innovation, stating that this program represents the "most comprehensive carrier-led intermodal security program" available. Furthermore, he acknowledges that while no security system is infallible, these new measures effectively mitigate risks related to theft, underscoring Matson's commitment to customer cargo protection during inland transportation. As the company continues to navigate the complexities of modern logistics and supply chain management, this initiative positions Matson to not only respond adeptly to current challenges but also to set new standards in cargo security across the industry.
In addition to its security enhancements, Matson remains committed to providing expedited services in the Transpacific trade lane, notably through its China-Long Beach Express (CLX) and Matson Asia Express (MAX). Both services promise competitive ocean transit times and exemplary destination offerings, including same or next-day freight availability. As Matson innovates to safeguard its cargo, it also strengthens its reputation for reliability and efficiency in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
Through these advancements, Matson not only elevates its service offerings but also reinforces trust among customers, vital in sustaining long-term partnerships within the global transportation ecosystem.
