Innovative Technology Enhances Microtunneling Efficiency in Water Infrastructure
Northwest Pipe Company's subsidiary, NWPX Infrastructure, marks a significant milestone with the first commercial deployment of its patented Permalok® Radial Bending Joint (RBJ) technology. This innovative solution addresses the challenges faced in microtunneling, particularly in urban environments where existing infrastructure complicates construction. The RBJ technology allows for the installation of steel casing pipes along curved trajectories, facilitating improved maneuverability in congested areas. The application in the South Hillsborough Pipeline project showcases the technology's potential, as it enables the installation of 5,764 linear feet of Permalok® steel casing pipe to support 18 underground crossings.
The South Hillsborough Pipeline project aims to enhance water delivery capacity significantly, increasing it by up to 65 million gallons per day. This improvement will facilitate the transfer of water from a regional treatment facility to a treatment plant in Lithia and a future drinking water facility near Balm. Managed by Tampa Bay Water, in collaboration with construction manager Garney and microtunneling contractor Huxted Trenchless, the project benefits from the RBJ technology's unique ability to place microtunneling shafts within designated bore paths. This capability reduces the need for additional shafts, thereby minimizing construction impacts and overall costs.
Scott Montross, President and CEO of NWPX Infrastructure, emphasizes that the RBJ is revolutionizing microtunneling practices by simplifying curved installations. With a focus on enhancing efficiency and adaptability in water infrastructure projects, NWPX continues to solidify its position as a leader in engineered water transmission systems. Founded in 1966, Northwest Pipe Company stands as North America’s largest producer in this sector, offering a range of solution-based products tailored to diverse market needs.
In addition to the RBJ technology, NWPX Infrastructure remains committed to providing advanced solutions for water-related infrastructure challenges. As urban areas continue to grow and existing utility lines become more congested, the demand for innovative solutions like the RBJ will only increase. The successful implementation of this technology not only benefits the South Hillsborough Pipeline project but also sets a precedent for future infrastructure developments in densely populated regions.
