Nuvve Holding Advances Electric School Bus Technology in Illinois

Nuvve Holding Corp. embarks on an innovative pilot program in collaboration with Resource Innovations and ComEd to assess the advantages of bidirectional charging with electric school buses in northern Illinois. This initiative, running through the end of Q4 2025, seeks to evaluate the environmental, societal, and grid impacts of integrating vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology into the region's clean transportation efforts. Serving over 4.3 million customers, ComEd aims to leverage Nuvve's cutting-edge V2G technology, which transforms electric vehicles into mobile energy storage assets. This functionality not only enhances grid stability but also reduces energy costs by enabling the use of energy stored in school bus batteries during peak demand periods.

The pilot program will involve three school districts that are already customers of Nuvve, allowing for a practical demonstration of how electric school buses can deliver significant benefits beyond transportation. By utilizing stored energy, these vehicles can contribute to improved energy efficiency within local communities. ComEd's Vice President of Strategy and Energy Policy, Scott Vogt, expresses excitement about the project, emphasizing its role in promoting equitable electric vehicle adoption and supporting local school districts in reducing emissions while upgrading their fleets in a cost-effective manner.

This collaboration aligns with ComEd's broader Beneficial Electrification investments, which encompass various rebate and education programs designed to meet the growing demand for electric vehicle infrastructure. Since last year, ComEd has successfully installed 3,500 EV charging ports and increased its fleet with 200 electric vehicles, including school buses. The partnership with Nuvve is expected to further enhance the environmental and economic benefits associated with electric school buses, paving the way for a more sustainable and efficient energy future in Illinois.

In addition to the pilot program’s objectives, both Nuvve and ComEd aim to create a model for other regions considering similar initiatives. The insights gained from this collaboration will not only help improve local energy management but also set benchmarks for future electric vehicle adoption and infrastructure development. As the demand for clean transportation solutions continues to grow, Nuvve's strategic partnerships position the company at the forefront of the transition towards sustainable energy practices.
