Permian pilot pairs Natura MSR‑100 with NGL Energy Partners LP for produced‑water desalination, power
- NGL Water Solutions Permian handles more than 3 million barrels per day of produced and flowback water.
- NGL will use its operational footprint and expected TPDES permit to develop nuclear‑heated thermal desalination facilities.
- NGL is shifting from water logistics to integrated power‑water services, aiming to reduce natural‑gas use but facing permitting hurdles.
Permian pilot links molten‑salt reactors to produced‑water treatment
Natura Resources and NGL Water Solutions Permian announce an agreement to pair Natura’s 100‑megawatt MSR‑100 molten‑salt reactor design with NGL Energy Partners’ thermal desalination and produced‑water treatment operations in the Permian Basin. The partners say the integrated system will use nuclear heat to desalinate oil‑and‑gas produced water while simultaneously generating electricity for industrial users, aiming to free up natural gas currently consumed for onsite thermal needs.
NGL leverages produced‑water network for nuclear‑heat desalination
NGL Water Solutions Permian, a subsidiary of NGL Energy Partners LP, currently moves, treats, recycles and disposes of more than 3 million barrels per day of produced and flowback water in U.S. basins. The company intends to use its operational footprint and an expected Texas Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (TPDES) permit to develop a flexible industrial‑scale facility that couples Natura’s MSR‑100 heat source with thermal desalination units. The partners highlight potential end‑users including data centers, agriculture and other industries that require both power and freshwater.
The arrangement is designed to replace onsite fossil fuel‑fired thermal generation with nuclear heat, reducing natural gas consumption at oilfield facilities and offering a lower‑carbon alternative for power. In addition to producing freshwater, the thermal process is described as enabling extraction of critical minerals from produced water streams, providing an additional revenue or feedstock opportunity. The partners target industrial‑scale deployments in the Permian within the coming years, positioning the project as a response to Texas’s combined energy and water demand pressures.
Natura’s reactor development underpins the deal
Natura is advancing molten‑salt reactor technology and references demonstration work tied to an MSR‑1 facility. Doug Robison, Natura’s founder and CEO, says the combined reactor and thermal desalination approach can deliver “clean, economic power” while treating industrial water for beneficial reuse and supporting regional decarbonization and resilience.
Commercial and regulatory next steps
The collaboration signals a strategic pivot for NGL from pure water logistics and treatment toward integrated power‑water services, but the partners still face permitting, construction and demonstration hurdles before full rollout. If successful, the project could scale existing produced‑water infrastructure into a combined water and clean‑power platform for the Permian Basin.
