Quarterhill Secures Crucial California Contracts to Boost Highway Safety and Freight Mobility
In a significant development for intelligent transportation system (ITS) innovations, Quarterhill Inc. announces the award of three new projects from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), valued at approximately $2.4 million. These initiatives aim to enhance highway safety and freight mobility across some of California's vital transportation corridors. According to Chuck Myers, CEO of Quarterhill, this partnership underlines California's leadership in integrating advanced technology to transform highway efficiency and safety metrics within North America's extensive freight transportation network.
The project portfolio includes the implementation of cutting-edge systems designed for targeted enforcement and infrastructure monitoring. One of the key initiatives is the Desert Hills Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility in Riverside County, where Quarterhill will deploy an electronic screening system that bolsters law enforcement operations without compromising the flow of traffic. Another project, the Interstate 10 Weight in Motion (WIM) Data Collection System in San Bernardino County, aims to collect critical data on vehicle weight and traffic patterns. This information is essential for effective infrastructure evaluations and supports long-term freight planning initiatives. Lastly, the Route 805 WIM Expansion in San Diego County will expand the network’s WIM capabilities, ensuring comprehensive data collection along a crucial freight corridor.
Quarterhill's proactive engagement in these projects signifies its commitment to enhancing the state's transportation landscape. With California facilitating the movement of over 2.4 billion tons of freight annually across more than 50,000 miles of highway, accurate and accessible data is vital for effective transportation planning. The newly installed systems will not only assist in developing more informed infrastructure assessments and freight mobility strategies but also enable customized enforcement methods tailored to meet real-time traffic demands. The anticipated installation of the WIM data collection system is set for late 2026 and comes with a six-year warranty, reinforcing Quarterhill’s dedication to delivering innovative technological solutions in collaboration with Caltrans.
In addition to these projects, Quarterhill's continuous investment in ITS technology aligns seamlessly with ongoing efforts to modernize transportation infrastructure nationwide. As urbanization and freight requirements evolve, Quarterhill positions itself as a key player in shaping the future of intelligent transportation systems. The focus on strategic partnerships continues to bolster the effectiveness of transportation networks, ensuring that safety and efficiency remain a priority in California and beyond.
