Reliance Steel launches integrated predictive maintenance suite for mechanical power systems
Reliance Steel & Aluminum Company is rolling out an expanded portfolio of smart products and services aimed at predictive maintenance (PdM) for mechanical power systems, the company announces in Fort Worth, Texas. The offering bundles components such as gearmotors, bearings, couplings and belts with IIoT sensors, vibration monitors, soft starters and alignment tools, and layers in machine learning, AI and analytics to detect early signs of wear and predict failures. Reliance Steel positions the suite to protect conveyors, HVAC and process equipment that underpin material handling and heavy industrial operations common to the metals distribution and processing sector.
The company frames the initiative as a way to reduce the cascading business impacts of unplanned downtime, citing industry averages that put the cost of unscheduled outages at roughly $260,000 per hour. Reliance Steel emphasizes measurable PdM outcomes reported by manufacturers — including a 30–50% reduction in unplanned downtime and up to 25–30% lower operating costs — and says its products are modular and scalable to integrate with existing programmable logic controllers and control architectures. The strategy aims to extend equipment lifetimes and improve reliability for high‑load applications that are critical to steel and aluminum service centers.
Reliance Steel also highlights the analytical and service elements as central to the value proposition, arguing that sensor data alone is insufficient without domain expertise to translate signals into prioritized maintenance actions. The company offers diagnostic services, technical support and training to help plant teams implement PdM roadmaps, reduce mean time to repair and improve overall equipment effectiveness in settings that demand continuous throughput.
Service packages tie hardware to on-site expertise
Beyond hardware and software, Reliance Steel is marketing bundled service packages that couple installation and commissioning with ongoing diagnostics and workforce training. The company says these services help customers set asset criticality, calibrate sensor thresholds and convert analytics into actionable maintenance plans.
Sector pressures make PdM a practical priority
Reliance Steel frames the push as a response to industry workforce strains — surveys show 67% of maintenance personnel feel overwhelmed by urgent repair demands and 59% call teams understaffed — and broader moves in manufacturing toward IIoT-enabled maintenance. The company presents PdM as a practical lever for protecting output, margins and customer commitments across metalmaking, processing and distribution operations.
