Sun Life Financial Enhances Cancer Care Support for Members
Sun Life U.S. unveils an expansion of its Expert Cancer Review (ECR) service, aiming to proactively engage members shortly after a cancer diagnosis. This initiative focuses on members who file cancer-related claims for disability or critical illness insurance. Upon receiving such claims, Sun Life reaches out to connect members with ECR services included in their employers’ Sun Life stop-loss policy, ensuring that those enrolled in disability or supplemental benefits have access to vital resources. The ECR service offers objective second opinions from independent oncology specialists, which empowers patients in their treatment decisions. Recent data reveals that from 2024 to 2025, 41% of facilitated second opinions led to a change in diagnosis or treatment plans, underscoring the importance of informed decision-making for affected members.
The integration of the ECR service into Sun Life’s Health and Risk Solutions reflects a strategic enhancement to the overall Group Benefits experience. Joi Tillman, president of Group Benefits for Sun Life U.S., highlights the goal of connecting members “closer to the time of their diagnosis.” This expansion follows the previous introduction of Health Navigator, a personal care advisory service, which aids in clinical navigation alongside providing income replacement and cash benefits. By offering such comprehensive support, Sun Life ensures that financial and medical advice come hand-in-hand, aiming to alleviate the burdensome out-of-pocket costs associated with cancer care.
Cancer remains a significant health concern in the United States, being both frequently diagnosed and costly to treat. According to Sun Life’s 2025 High Cost Claims Report, the annual expenses associated with cancer claims vary significantly—ranging from approximately $235,000 for solid tumors to over $300,000 for blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma. The proactive messaging surrounding the ECR service not only enhances early access to specialized care, but it also underscores Sun Life’s commitment to improving health outcomes for its members amid a challenging landscape of increasing healthcare costs.
In addition to its cancer care initiatives, Sun Life’s broader approach focuses on engaging employers in order to optimize referrals for members. Coordinated efforts between employers and administrators allow for streamlined access to necessary specialist reviews and recommendations. This structured outreach is part of Sun Life's comprehensive strategy to address the needs of its policyholders effectively. By prioritizing early intervention and support, Sun Life demonstrates its dedication to member health and well-being in an increasingly complex healthcare environment.
