United Playaz Hosts Annual Gun Buyback Event to Combat Gun Violence in San Francisco
In a proactive effort to tackle gun violence, United Playaz, a San Francisco-based organization focused on violence prevention and community development, announces its Annual Gun Buyback Event scheduled for December 14, 2024. This year’s event coincides with National Gun Buyback Day and marks the 12th anniversary of the tragic Sandy Hook shooting. The initiative, carried out in partnership with the San Francisco Police Department and local gun violence prevention organizations, aims to reduce the number of firearms in circulation, particularly focusing on protecting the youth.
Participants can anonymously surrender handguns for $100 and assault rifles for $200, with the ambitious target of collecting 500 firearms. These weapons will not only be safely disposed of but will also be repurposed into jewelry and other products, helping to fund future buyback events. United Playaz has a proven track record, having successfully removed more than 2,500 weapons from the streets since the program's inception in 2010. The organization emphasizes a community-driven approach, aiming to foster awareness and collaboration among residents to address the issue of gun violence.
The involvement of leading cannabis brand STIIIZY has significantly bolstered this initiative. Since 2020, STIIIZY has contributed a total of $40,000, including a $10,000 donation for this year's event, and encourages employee participation to enhance community engagement. Additionally, Pierce's Pledge, a nonprofit dedicated to preventing gun violence, provides further funding to support this vital initiative. Together, these entities strive not only to mitigate gun violence but also to create a safer, more cohesive community in San Francisco.
United Playaz’s Gun Buyback Event highlights the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing gun violence. By engaging the community and providing incentives for firearm surrender, the organization promotes safety and awareness while demonstrating the potential for change. The repurposing of collected firearms into useful items serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing commitment to transforming a culture of violence into one of healing and support.
As this event approaches, the collective efforts of United Playaz, local authorities, and community partners continue to inspire hope for a future with fewer guns and safer streets, fostering a culture of peace and community resilience.
