Zhang appointment consolidates VNET’s operational finance as data centre footprint expands

BEIJING — VNET Group appoints Peter Zhihua Zhang as Senior Vice President, Operational Finance, effective immediately, in a move that tightens the company’s financial oversight as it scales data centre operations. Zhang is authorized to review and approve the company’s financial statements and related SEC and Nasdaq filings and will serve as VNET’s principal accounting officer under U.S. federal securities laws and exchange rules. The role makes him responsible for day‑to‑day financial operations and compliance at the Nasdaq‑listed internet data centre services provider.

Zhang, who joins the senior finance ranks after leading VNET’s accounting, taxation and compliance teams since October 2019, brings experience setting up financial systems across multiple business units. Internally he is already directing the company’s domestic debt financing efforts and its strategic partnership with Microsoft, according to the company. VNET’s executive chairperson and interim CEO Josh Sheng Chen frames the promotion as part of a preference for advancing homegrown talent and says Zhang’s institutional knowledge will sharpen execution of strategic initiatives and support sustained growth.

Analysts and industry observers say the appointment signals VNET’s focus on strengthening governance and operational finance as it navigates capacity expansion, complex financing and regulatory scrutiny that accompany the data centre sector in China. By centralising approval authority and designating a principal accounting officer, the company aims to streamline its SEC and Nasdaq reporting process and bolster internal controls across hosting, cloud and connectivity businesses. The move also aligns with broader efforts in the sector to professionalise finance functions amid faster buildouts of colocation capacity and multi‑partner cloud on‑ramps.

VNET’s service profile and customer base

VNET is a carrier- and cloud‑neutral internet data centre services provider in China, offering hosting, integrated data centre (IDC), cloud and business VPN services that enable customers to colocate servers, connect to the country’s internet backbone and improve reliability and security. The company operates in more than 30 cities and serves a diversified client base of over 7,000 hosting and enterprise customers including internet companies and government entities.

Partnerships and financing context

The company highlights Zhang’s leadership of domestic debt financing and the Microsoft partnership as key to supporting capacity growth and customer connectivity initiatives. Strengthened financial governance and an authorised senior accounting officer aim to provide greater assurance to partners and creditors as VNET pursues strategic expansion across China’s competitive data centre market.
