ALLETE Clean Energy Advances Wind Power with Whitetail Project Sale
ALLETE Clean Energy, a subsidiary of ALLETE, Inc., makes a significant move in the renewable energy sector by selling its Whitetail wind project in southwestern Wisconsin to Invenergy. This project, initially acquired by ALLETE Clean Energy in 2021, is poised to generate approximately 70 megawatts of power through a setup of up to 21 turbines across 5,938 acres in Grant County. The energy produced is anticipated to be sufficient to power tens of thousands of homes, aligning perfectly with corporate sustainability initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions and promoting clean energy solutions.
Nicole Johnson, president of ALLETE Clean Energy, underscores the company's dedication to providing cost-effective clean energy while enhancing the Midwest's sustainable energy infrastructure. With the sale to Invenergy, the latter intends to manage the project's development and construction before transferring ownership to WEC Energy Group's utilities, including We Energies, Wisconsin Public Service Corp. (WPS), and Madison Gas and Electric Co. (MGE). This strategic decision not only marks a step forward in increasing renewable energy capacity in the region but also reflects ALLETE's ongoing commitment to expansion and collaboration within the ever-evolving clean energy marketplace.
The sale of the Whitetail wind project follows ALLETE Clean Energy’s earlier transaction in 2023 involving the adjacent Red Barn wind project, which was also sold to WPS and MGE. These initiatives highlight ALLETE Clean Energy’s strategic focus on enlarging its portfolio of renewable energy projects while maintaining an operational capacity of over 1,200 megawatts of wind energy across seven states. This approach supports the company’s broader goal of fostering a transition towards carbon-free energy solutions, thereby contributing to a sustainable future for the energy sector.
In addition to its wind projects, ALLETE Clean Energy is part of a diversified energy framework that includes electric utilities such as Minnesota Power and Superior Water, Light and Power. The company’s commitment to renewable energy is further evidenced by its involvement in various partnerships and investments aimed at enhancing the reliability and sustainability of energy supplies across the Midwest. With a focus on long-term power sales agreements, ALLETE Clean Energy continues to play a crucial role in the advancement of renewable energy infrastructure in the region.
