Ameren adds nuclear expertise to its board as it balances generation and grid modernization
Board appointment aims to bolster nuclear role in grid reliability
Ameren announces that Timothy S. Rausch will join its board of directors effective March 1, a move the St. Louis utility says strengthens oversight of its generation strategy. The company discloses the appointment on Feb. 9 and says Rausch brings three decades of industry experience, most recently serving as executive vice president and chief nuclear officer at the Tennessee Valley Authority from October 2018 to July 2025.
Chairman, president and CEO Martin J. Lyons says Rausch is "a recognized leader in nuclear generation" whose experience will support Ameren’s diverse generation resource strategy, adding that "nuclear generation will continue to be an important element" in delivering reliable, resilient and affordable energy. Ameren frames the hire as intended to inform board deliberations on capital planning, asset performance and regulatory compliance as it weighs investments across generation, transmission and distribution.
The company emphasizes Rausch’s operational focus on safety and reliability and his prior leadership of nuclear fleets at large utilities as directly applicable to Ameren’s efforts to modernize the grid while meeting decarbonization goals. With regional pressures from policy and customer expectations, Ameren sees enhanced nuclear expertise at the board level as a tool to balance near-term reliability needs with longer-term transitions in its resource mix.
Company footprint and regulatory context
Ameren, regulated through Ameren Missouri and Ameren Illinois, supplies electricity to about 2.5 million customers and natural gas to more than 900,000 customers across a roughly 64,000‑square‑mile service area. Its Ameren Transmission Company of Illinois develops, owns and operates rate‑regulated transmission projects in the Midcontinent Independent System Operator territory, positioning the company within the broader Midwestern regional grid and policy environment.
Rausch’s background and qualifications
Rausch’s resume includes senior nuclear roles at Talen Energy and PPL and earlier roles at Exelon Nuclear and FirstEnergy, giving him extensive experience overseeing nuclear operations and regulatory interaction. He holds an MBA from Cleveland State University and a BS in nuclear engineering from the University of Cincinnati, qualifications Ameren highlights as supporting governance on safety, reliability and decarbonization pathways.
