American Public Education expands AI and advanced computing offerings

Charles Town, West Virginia-based American Public University System (APUS), part of American Public Education, on Feb. 17, 2026 announces a major expansion of its STEM curriculum aimed at accelerating workforce readiness in computing and artificial intelligence. The university introduces a Master of Science in Computer Science through its School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, supported by MIT-powered coursework designed to deliver industry-relevant skills to working adults and military-affiliated learners nationwide.

New master's and concentrations aim to build industry-ready computing leaders

The new master’s program emphasizes advanced computing and AI techniques that APUS says are applicable across industries, positioning graduates for leadership roles in an increasingly digital economy. APUS highlights a curriculum that blends computer science, analytics and artificial intelligence, and notes a Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence is expected to be available in summer 2026. The university frames these moves as part of a broader strategy to expand access to high-demand technical training through online delivery.

APUS simultaneously introduces four targeted concentrations within existing bachelor’s programs to address emerging technical needs. Quantum Computing, added to the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, focuses on implications for cybersecurity, data processing and advanced computation. Robotics and Autonomous Systems is nested within the Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering to prepare students for automation and intelligent machines. A Blockchain and Digital Currency concentration in the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology targets decentralized finance and commerce, while a Climate Change and Resilience track in the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science offers an interdisciplinary approach to managing climate risk.

Leadership and industry alignment underpin the expansion

APUS Provost Elizabeth Joy Johnson says computer science and AI act as catalysts for innovation and economic growth and that the new offerings expand access to workplace skills aligned with employer needs. Brian Freeland, dean of the School of STEM and the School of Health Sciences, states the curricula reflect technological innovation and real-world application by integrating practical projects and industry-informed content.

The university emphasizes career services and employer partnerships to accelerate student placement into roles such as software engineer, data scientist, quantum analyst, robotics engineer and blockchain developer. APUS says online delivery, measurable career-placement metrics and partnerships with industry aim to match academic pathways to emerging workforce projections and employer demand.
