American Water Moves Policy and Tech Agenda to Washington
American Water Works Co. is using this week’s National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) Winter Policy Summit in Washington to press a technology-and-resilience agenda aimed at improving service reliability and reducing water loss. Company leaders join regulators, commissioners and utility peers Feb. 8–11 to discuss infrastructure, workforce and the operational tools the firm says deliver practical customer benefits.
D.C. Summit Sharpens Focus on Water System Resilience
At the summit, Chief Executive John Griffith reiterates American Water’s priority of providing safe, clean, reliable and affordable water and wastewater services and highlights investments in system resiliency and customer-facing technologies. The company frames advanced leak detection, smart infrastructure and coordinated response plans as near-term, cost‑effective ways to limit losses and prevent service disruptions for the more than 14 million people it serves.
Senior executives lead detailed sessions on operational collaboration and digital tools. Cheryl Norton, executive vice president and chief operating officer, appears on a panel titled “Resilience in Action” about cross-agency coordination when crises strike. Deb Degillio, vice president and chief technology and information officer, speaks on “AI in Water,” exploring how artificial intelligence helps optimize treatment, enhance system monitoring and support environmental goals. Justin Ladner, president of Pennsylvania American Water, discusses the company’s Leak Detection Program, which American Water presents as a cornerstone for reducing non-revenue water and improving service reliability through targeted, data-driven fixes.
Company officials use the forum to press regulators on investment and policy frameworks that enable deployment of these technologies across its regulated service territories in 14 states and on 18 military installations. American Water emphasizes that regulatory engagement and continued capital investment are central to meeting future demand, keeping costs manageable and ensuring water quality.
Community Grants Drive Local Conservation and Safety
Separately, Illinois American Water launches the American Water Charitable Foundation’s 2026 Water and Environment Grant Program, inviting local partners to apply for projects in conservation, education, climate resilience and recreation. The program builds on $1.7 million awarded in 2025 to 80 organizations, which funded initiatives such as drowning-prevention lessons through the Gateway Region YMCA and watershed and conservation projects across Illinois communities.
Merger Vote Signals Move Toward Consolidation
American Water and Essential Utilities report overwhelming shareholder approval this week for proposals tied to their proposed merger, with final votes filed on Form 8‑K. Both companies say the transaction remains subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals, including Hart‑Scott‑Rodino clearance, and expect to complete the deal by the end of the first quarter of 2027.
