Davenport launch: American Water unveils 2026 Water and Environment grant program
Davenport, Iowa — American Water’s Iowa subsidiary is launching the American Water Charitable Foundation 2026 Water and Environment Grant Program, inviting community partners to apply for funding for projects that advance clean water, conservation, environmental education, climate variability preparedness and water-based recreation. The program targets nonprofits, schools, municipalities and community groups that serve communities where American Water operates, and it is presented as part of the foundation’s three pillars of giving — Water, People and Communities.
Company leaders frame the grants as an extension of American Water’s role as a provider of safe water and wastewater services and as a partner in watershed protection. Iowa American Water President Brad Nielsen stresses the importance of partnering with local organizations to protect and restore watersheds for future generations, while Foundation President Carrie Williams underscores the group’s commitment to “keep communities flowing” by supporting impactful local initiatives nationwide. Applications are available through the American Water Charitable Foundation website and through Iowa American Water, with award sizes varying by project scope and population served.
The foundation positions the 2026 program as building on measurable local impacts from prior years. In 2025 the foundation awards $1.7 million to 80 organizations across 12 states, and since 2012 it invests more than $25 million in grants and matching gifts benefiting communities where American Water and employees live and work. The announcement is distributed locally via PR Newswire on Feb. 5, 2026.
Eligibility and application details
The foundation encourages submissions from a broad range of organizations operating in American Water service areas. Interested applicants are directed to check eligibility, timelines and application instructions on the foundation’s website or to contact Iowa American Water for guidance; award amounts vary depending on project type and community population served.
Local impact example
River Action of the Quad Cities illustrates the kind of projects the program supports: a prior grant funds CoCoRaHS rain gauges and training for high school and college students who attend the Next Gen Summit in October 2025, creating a volunteer rainfall-observation network that reports to agencies including the National Weather Service. Five Iowa organizations — Clinton Substance Abuse Council; Bettendorf Public Library Foundation; Nahant Marsh Education Center; River Action, Inc.; and Vince Jetter Community Center — receive 2025 grants, highlighting the foundation’s emphasis on local partnerships.
