Proactive Water Conservation Amid Drought Conditions

As Pennsylvania American Water confronts ongoing drought conditions, the company takes a significant step by urging its customers to voluntarily reduce nonessential water usage by 10-15%. This initiative comes in response to an expanded drought watch declaration by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), which encompasses 17 out of the state's 37 counties, including Adams, Beaver, and Butler. The company emphasizes that while current water supply levels remain adequate, proactive measures are essential to mitigate the risk of escalating drought conditions. Brandy Braun, the company’s director of water quality and environmental compliance, underscores the importance of community engagement in conservation efforts, as these actions could prevent the need for more stringent restrictions in the future.

The DEP's expanded drought watch is informed by a comprehensive assessment of public water supply levels and four critical indicators: precipitation, surface water flow, groundwater levels, and soil moisture. While the drought watch represents the least severe classification among the state's three drought levels, Pennsylvania American Water recognizes the potential for worsening conditions. To facilitate water conservation, the company provides a range of resources on its website, including a Water Use Calculator developed by the Alliance for Water Efficiency. This tool helps customers identify practical ways to conserve both water and energy, reflecting the company’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

In addition to the Water Use Calculator, Pennsylvania American Water actively promotes conservation tips through various channels, including email, bill enclosures, and social media. Suggested practices for customers include running dishwashers and washing machines only when full, utilizing free leak detection kits, and installing water-efficient fixtures. By fostering a culture of responsible water use, the company aims to strengthen community involvement in conservation efforts, ensuring that essential water resources remain available for all, particularly during critical periods like this.

Community Engagement Through Charitable Giving

In tandem with its conservation efforts, the American Water Charitable Foundation (AWCF) announces a successful Giving Tuesday campaign, raising over $450,000 for eligible charities nationwide. Each of the foundation’s 4,500 employees receives $100 to recommend a charity of their choice, resulting in donations to 2,100 organizations across the country. This initiative not only underscores the company's commitment to community support but also emphasizes the collective impact employees can make through charitable giving.

Since its inception in 2012, the AWCF has invested over $20 million in grants and matching gifts, focusing on initiatives that resonate with American Water's workforce and benefit the communities it serves.
