Archer Aviation and Soracle Forge Partnership to Transform Air Mobility in Japan

Archer Aviation Inc. solidifies its position in the advanced air mobility (AAM) sector through a strategic partnership with Soracle Corporation, a joint venture between Japan Airlines and Sumitomo Corporation. This collaboration aims to introduce electric air taxi services in urban Japanese areas, addressing the challenges posed by traffic congestion and geographical barriers. Utilizing Archer's Midnight aircraft, the partnership plans to establish a network of aerial routes across major Japanese cities, including Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya, as well as popular tourist destinations like Hokkaido and Okinawa. By offering efficient air transportation solutions, Archer and Soracle aim to enhance connectivity for both residents and tourists, creating a vital alternative to traditional ground transportation.

The agreement, formalized during a signing ceremony in Tokyo on September 26, 2024, allows Soracle to place an order for up to 100 Midnight aircraft, with an estimated investment of approximately $500 million. This significant commitment underscores both companies' confidence in the growing demand for AAM solutions, as urban areas increasingly seek innovative transportation methods. As part of their collaboration, Archer and Soracle are working closely with the Japanese Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) to obtain the necessary certifications and regulatory approvals, facilitating a smooth rollout of their air taxi services. Initial discussions regarding compliance and safety protocols are already in motion, paving the way for the anticipated launch.

In a bid to engage the public and generate excitement around AAM services, Archer and Soracle plan to conduct a public flight demonstration at the upcoming World Expo, which is set to welcome around 28 million visitors over six months. This event, aligned with the Expo's theme of "Future Society Showcase," offers a perfect platform for showcasing their vision for accessible air transportation. Both Andrew Cummins, Senior Director of Business Development at Archer, and Yukihiro Ota, CEO of Soracle, express optimism about the potential impact of their services, aiming to enrich lives through enhanced mobility options and promote public acceptance of AAM in Japan.
