Art's Way Manufacturing Boosts U.S. Defense with Polar Semiconductor's New Technology Agreement
- Polar Semiconductor is the only U.S.-owned foundry producing high-voltage BCD semiconductor wafers for Aerospace and Defense.
- The company plans to invest $525 million to expand facilities and enhance technology offerings for new markets.
- Polar's collaboration with Tower Semiconductor strengthens U.S. semiconductor manufacturing, supporting national defense and technological self-sufficiency.
Polar Semiconductor's Strategic Leap in Defense Technology
Polar Semiconductor, located in Bloomington, Minnesota, has achieved a significant milestone with a technology licensing agreement with Tower Semiconductor that enables the domestic production of the TS18 Power Management process. This agreement uniquely positions Polar as the only U.S.-owned foundry capable of producing high-voltage BCD (Bipolar-CMOS-DMOS) semiconductor wafers, particularly targeting the Aerospace and Defense sectors. The collaboration not only enhances Polar's technological capabilities but also aligns with the broader objective of strengthening U.S. national security by onshoring crucial defense technologies.
The partnership allows Polar to harness Tower's 180nm technology and access a versatile process design kit (PDK), facilitating a robust domestic fabrication site for critical semiconductor technologies. According to Mike Scott, General Manager for Aerospace & Defense at Tower Semiconductor, this initiative is pivotal for providing U.S. clients, including government primes, access to mature technologies that have been in high-volume production in countries like Japan and Israel. This move is especially relevant as the U.S. defense sector seeks reliable domestic sources for essential technologies, reinforcing the country’s self-sufficiency in critical areas.
Surya Iyer, President and COO of Polar, underscores that this agreement marks a significant step towards Polar becoming an independent, U.S.-owned foundry. With plans to invest approximately $525 million to expand its facilities and enhance its technology offerings, Polar aims to cater to new markets and customers effectively. Backed by funding from the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act and the Minnesota Forward Fund, Polar’s initiative demonstrates a long-term commitment to bolstering U.S. semiconductor manufacturing capabilities, thereby supporting national defense strategies and enhancing the technological landscape.
In addition to the technology partnership, Polar Semiconductor's substantial investment reflects its intent to diversify and strengthen its production capabilities within the semiconductor industry. With over 60 years of experience, Polar is well-positioned to manufacture Integrated Circuits (BCD, BiCMOS) and discrete components (MOSFET, IGBT) using advanced automation systems. The scalability of its 8-inch silicon wafer fabrication process will enable Polar to effectively respond to growing demands in both the defense and commercial markets.
The collaboration between Polar Semiconductor and Tower Semiconductor represents a vital step toward enhancing U.S. manufacturing capabilities in the semiconductor space, particularly within the Aerospace and Defense sectors. This strategic initiative not only aims to meet current technological demands but also positions Polar as a key player in advancing the national security infrastructure through homegrown semiconductor solutions.
