Strategic Joint Venture to Boost UAE's SAR Satellite Manufacturing

In a significant development for the UAE's burgeoning space sector, Space42, an AI-driven SpaceTech company, partners with ICEYE, a frontrunner in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite operations, to create a strategic joint venture focused on manufacturing SAR satellites within the UAE. This collaboration stems from their successful prior efforts, including the recent launch of the UAE's first SAR satellite, Foresight-1, in August 2024. The joint venture aims to fortify the UAE's Earth Observation (EO) Program, responding to the growing demand for high-resolution SAR imagery, which is essential in various applications such as agriculture, urban planning, and disaster management.

As part of this initiative, Space42 plans to establish Assembly, Integration, and Testing (AIT) facilities, as well as Low Earth Orbit (LEO) mission operations centers in Abu Dhabi. These facilities are expected to foster a local SAR ecosystem, enabling not just satellite manufacturing but also comprehensive constellation operations. This development is pivotal for technology transfer and knowledge sharing, key components in advancing local research and development capabilities for sovereign SAR payloads. Hasan Al Hosani, CEO of Bayanat Smart Solutions, emphasizes that this joint venture aligns seamlessly with the UAE’s space ambitions, aiming to enhance value for customers through innovative AI-driven solutions.

Moreover, the collaboration is set to localize the supply chain by sourcing components from UAE industrial players. This move is anticipated to stimulate the local economy, create job opportunities for Emirati talent, and contribute significantly to Emiratization efforts. As Rafal Modrzewski, CEO and Co-founder of ICEYE, notes, the venture not only strengthens local SAR capabilities but also positions the UAE as a competitive player in the global space technology landscape. Overall, this joint venture marks a considerable leap toward establishing the UAE as a hub for advanced satellite technology and innovation.
