Innovative Education Initiatives: The Tech Interactive’s Design Challenge Learning Program Receives Prestigious Award
The Tech Interactive, a prominent science and technology center located in Silicon Valley, garners recognition for its groundbreaking Design Challenge Learning (DCL) Teacher Trainer Program in Kenya, receiving the esteemed 2025 Roy L. Shafer Leading Edge Award from the Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC). This accolade highlights the program’s significant contributions to the educational landscape, particularly in supporting the implementation of Kenya's Competency Based Curriculum. Launched in 2023, the DCL program emphasizes experiential learning, moving away from traditional rote memorization to more engaging, problem-solving methodologies.
The DCL initiative adopts a train-the-trainer model that has successfully trained over 500 Trainers of Teachers (ToTs) in the Kenyan counties of Nakuru and Kisumu. These trained educators have, in turn, reached nearly 20,000 teachers, impacting more than 568,000 students across grades 4 to 9. The DCL framework is designed to promote collaboration and student-led discovery in the classroom, equipping educators with the tools necessary to implement real-world problem-solving techniques. This approach not only enhances the learning experience for students but also encourages teachers to adopt innovative teaching methods that can be tailored to diverse learning environments.
Katrina Stevens, President & CEO of The Tech Interactive, underscores the transformative power of the Design Challenge Learning framework, noting its potential to revolutionize educational practices in both Silicon Valley and Kenya. As the program progresses, it is projected to reach its target of training 20,000 teachers and impacting over half a million students by the end of 2025. This ambitious goal exemplifies The Tech Interactive's dedication to enhancing STEM education on a global scale, showcasing how targeted educational programs can significantly uplift underserved communities and foster a new generation of learners equipped with essential skills for the future.
In addition to its accomplishments in Kenya, The Tech Interactive’s commitment to experiential learning continues to inspire educators and students alike. The program’s hybrid training model, which combines in-person workshops with online modules, ensures accessibility for teachers from various backgrounds, particularly in rural and underserved areas. This innovative approach not only addresses educational disparities but also empowers teachers to create engaging learning environments that emphasize critical thinking and collaboration.
As The Tech Interactive expands the reach of its Design Challenge Learning initiative, it sets a benchmark for educational innovation that resonates well beyond its immediate locale. The recognition from ASTC serves as a testament to the program's effectiveness in fostering sustainable changes in teaching practices, ultimately benefiting countless students and educators throughout Kenya and beyond.
