Broadband Development in Kodiak: Project Nunapet Unveiled

In a significant step towards bridging the digital divide in rural Alaska, Old Harbor Native Corporation, in partnership with Alaska Communications, launches Project Nunapet. This initiative receives a Round 2 grant from the Tribal Broadband Connectivity Program, overseen by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). The project aims to deliver transformative broadband services to four Tribal communities on Kodiak Island, namely Old Harbor, Chiniak, Akhiok, and Womens Bay. By installing a 155-mile subsea fiber optic cable connecting Homer to Kodiak Island, the project promises to enhance connectivity for approximately 570 homes, ensuring that residents benefit from high-speed internet access.

Named "Nunapet," an Alutiiq term translating to "our lands," the project emphasizes the cultural and spiritual connections of the Alutiiq people to their environment. The installation of a last-mile fiber network capable of delivering Gigabit speeds is set to revolutionize multiple aspects of daily life in these communities. This upgrade not only facilitates improved educational opportunities but also enhances healthcare access and stimulates economic growth. By addressing the longstanding issue of inadequate internet access, Project Nunapet seeks to uplift the quality of life for residents and ensure that they can fully participate in the digital economy.

Alaska Communications plays a vital role in this initiative, committing to maintain affordable service rates comparable to urban areas. The company also engages with the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) Lifeline program, aiming to assist low-income households in accessing these services.
