Blue Bird Corporation Drives Community Engagement with Electric Bus Donation
Blue Bird Corporation, a prominent player in the electric and low-emission school bus market, makes a significant contribution to community development by donating a state-of-the-art electric school bus to Hoop Bus Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to youth programming across North America. This innovative 40-foot, zero-emission vehicle, which features basketball hoops at both the front and back, aims to serve thousands of at-risk youth in California’s under-resourced communities. The bus's launch aligns with a P.E. Takeover event held at West Oakland Middle School, designed to promote social-emotional learning for students in grades 4-12.
Hoop Bus Inc., which has been operational since 2019, has already made a notable impact, engaging approximately 320,000 youth annually through a variety of events. With six vehicles in its fleet, three of which are Blue Bird buses, the organization exemplifies a commitment to fostering community connection through sports. Dan Moroni, the executive director of Hoop Bus, expresses enthusiasm about the integration of the new all-electric bus into their operations, highlighting its potential in promoting basketball while simultaneously supporting environmental sustainability. The customized features of the bus, including collaborative seating, storage, flatscreen TVs, and solar panels, enhance its functionality, making it a mobile hub for community engagement and empowerment.
Phil Horlock, Blue Bird’s president and CEO, emphasizes the health and environmental benefits associated with the zero-emission bus. Riders and the broader community can enjoy cleaner air and a quieter environment, which aligns with Blue Bird’s mission to promote sustainable transportation solutions. Furthermore, the partnership with InCharge Energy provides a Level 2 AC vehicle charger, ensuring the bus is fully operational for daily activities. With a capacity to transport up to 84 students and a range of 120 miles on a single charge, this electric bus represents a forward-thinking approach to community service and youth engagement.
In addition to its focus on youth programming, Blue Bird’s donation reflects a broader trend within the automotive industry towards sustainable practices and social responsibility. By supporting initiatives that uplift under-resourced communities, Blue Bird reinforces its commitment to environmental stewardship while making a meaningful difference in the lives of young people.
As the demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, collaborations like that of Blue Bird and Hoop Bus are crucial for fostering community empowerment and promoting a healthier future for the next generation.
