Blue Bird Corporation Empowers Youth with Electric School Bus Donation
Blue Bird Corporation, a frontrunner in electric and low-emission school buses, takes a significant step towards community engagement by donating a state-of-the-art electric school bus to Hoop Bus Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to youth programming. The unique 40-foot, zero-emission bus, equipped with basketball hoops at both ends, is designed to serve thousands of at-risk youth in underserved areas of California. This initiative not only provides a sustainable transportation option but also aligns with Hoop Bus’s mission of using basketball as a tool for community empowerment. The bus made its official debut at West Oakland Middle School during a P.E. Takeover event focused on enhancing social-emotional learning for students in grades 4-12.
The electric bus is a key addition to Hoop Bus's existing fleet, which currently operates six vehicles, three of which are Blue Bird buses. Since its inception in 2019, Hoop Bus has positively impacted approximately 320,000 youth annually through various community events. Dan Moroni, the executive director of Hoop Bus, expresses enthusiasm for incorporating the all-electric vehicle into their operations, highlighting its potential to promote basketball while also addressing environmental concerns. The bus boasts features such as collaborative seating, storage solutions, flatscreen TVs, and solar panels to power entertainment systems, merging fun with functionality in a sustainable way.
Phil Horlock, president and CEO of Blue Bird, underscores the health benefits of the zero-emission bus, not just for the riders but for the community at large. By reducing emissions, the bus contributes to cleaner air and healthier environments for youth. Furthermore, Blue Bird collaborates with InCharge Energy to provide a Level 2 AC vehicle charger, ensuring the bus is fully charged and ready for its daily activities, thereby fostering a sustainable operational model for Hoop Bus. With the capacity to carry 84 students and a range of up to 120 miles on a single charge, this electric bus represents a significant advancement in both transportation and community service.
In a broader context, Blue Bird's commitment to electric and low-emission vehicles highlights a growing trend in the transportation industry towards sustainability and social responsibility. This initiative not only supports the local community but also sets a benchmark for other organizations looking to make a positive impact through innovative solutions. The partnership with Hoop Bus exemplifies how companies can leverage their resources to foster community engagement and support youth development in meaningful ways.
