California American Water Invests in Advanced Drinking Water Treatment
California American Water is committing $6 million to the construction of a new treatment plant for the Fox Park Well in Antelope, California. This initiative addresses the state's updated drinking water standards for hexavalent chromium (CrVI), a contaminant that has raised significant public health concerns. The facility is designed to meet the stringent limit of 10 micrograms per liter of CrVI, roughly equivalent to 10 drops in an Olympic-sized swimming pool. By investing in this advanced treatment technology, California American Water underscores its dedication to ensuring safe and reliable drinking water for the communities it serves.
The Fox Park Well Treatment Project is pivotal in maintaining high-quality water standards, as articulated by Charlie Wolfe, Principal Project Delivery Engineer. The incorporation of advanced filtration technology will effectively remove naturally occurring CrVI, thereby enhancing public health and safety in the region. This project is part of a broader strategy aimed at improving water quality across Northern California, with similar upgrades planned for other treatment facilities, including the Watt-Davidson Treatment Plant and Dunnigan Treatment Plant. These enhancements reflect a proactive approach to water management that emphasizes both compliance with regulatory standards and the health of local populations.
Audie Foster, Director of Operations for California American Water's Northern Division, highlights that such projects not only meet but often exceed regulatory requirements, fostering trust with customers and delivering long-term value. The construction of the Fox Park treatment plant is currently underway, with completion expected in 2027. This development is critical for ensuring the long-term reliability of Antelope's water supply, illustrating California American Water's commitment to its mission of providing safe and affordable drinking water since its inception in 1886.
In addition to the Fox Park initiative, California American Water is focused on enhancing its overall water quality across its service areas. The company serves over 14 million people in 14 states and 18 military installations, making it the largest regulated water and wastewater utility in the United States. This commitment to infrastructure investment ensures that communities have access to safe drinking water now and into the future, solidifying the company’s role as a leader in the water utility sector.
The Fox Park Well Treatment Project not only meets immediate health and safety needs but also sets a precedent for future advancements in water treatment technology, reinforcing California American Water’s status as a responsible steward of public health and environmental sustainability.
