Consumers Energy is making significant strides in enhancing community safety by partnering with Emergency Response Solutions (ERS) International to host a specialized training session for first responders. Scheduled for October 13 to 17, 2025, this comprehensive weeklong program brings together firefighters from across Michigan, focusing on critical infrastructure and emergency response protocols. Notably, two of the training days will take place at Consumers Energy's Marshall Training Center, where participants will delve into utility emergency response practices designed to equip them for situations involving electrical hazards and utility-related incidents.

Norm Kapala, vice president of grid operation restoration at Consumers Energy, underscores the importance of this initiative. He articulates that joint training with emergency responders significantly enhances their collective ability to manage crises effectively. The Marshall Training Center offers a controlled environment where firefighters can familiarize themselves with utility equipment, learn to identify potential electrical hazards, and master fall protection techniques. This hands-on experience is vital for ensuring that first responders are well-prepared to tackle emergencies that may arise from utility infrastructure failures or extreme weather events.

Earlier this year, the company hosted the first Michigan State Police Fire Investigation training in Flint, which was attended by over 30 participants. This training focused on critical skills such as detecting gas theft, identifying leak sources, and assessing explosion risks.
