Compass Minerals Partners with EnergyX to Launch Direct Lithium Extraction Facility in Utah

- Compass Minerals partners with EnergyX to develop Project Powder Hound™, a lithium extraction facility in Utah.
- The facility aims to produce 30,000 tons per annum, diversifying Compass Minerals' portfolio beyond salt and plant nutrition.
- Project Powder Hound™ will create nearly 200 jobs and bolster the U.S. supply chain for battery-grade lithium.
Compass Minerals International (CMP) has forged a significant partnership with EnergyX to develop a commercial-scale direct lithium extraction facility in Utah, known as Project Powder Hound™. This strategic move marks a pivotal shift for Compass Minerals, traditionally focused on salt and plant nutrition products, now looking to capitalize on the soaring demand for lithium. The new facility is expected to produce 30,000 tons per annum and is sited near the Great Salt Lake, an area rich in lithium resources, estimated at roughly 2.4 million metric tons of lithium carbonate equivalent. This significant development not only diversifies Compass Minerals' portfolio but also aligns with national efforts to secure the supply chain for critical battery minerals, essential for the electric vehicle (EV) industry and renewable energy storage solutions.
Project Powder Hound™: A Sustainable Initiative
The construction of Project Powder Hound™ is a two-phase initiative, with the first phase aiming to extract 10,000 tpa of lithium from existing ponds, while the second phase may boost production by an additional 20,000 tpa sourced from upstream brine concentration ponds. Notably, the project promises to operate sustainably, utilizing EnergyX’s innovative GET-Lit™ technology designed to maximize lithium recovery while ensuring minimal environmental impact. This commitment to sustainability is increasingly vital as industries pivot towards greener practices in light of ongoing climate concerns.
Economic and Strategic Implications
Moreover, this partnership is expected to generate nearly 200 jobs in the region, significantly contributing to the local economy and enhancing the domestic supply chain for battery-grade lithium. Given the accelerating demand for EVs and renewable energy solutions, Compass Minerals' collaboration with EnergyX represents a strategic pathway not only to revitalizing its operational focus but also to playing an instrumental role in the U.S. energy transition.
Leveraging Existing Infrastructure
In addition to advancing its operational capacity, Compass Minerals looks to generate lease and licensing income from the extracted lithium without the typical costs and risks that come with such undertakings. This innovative partnership model allows the company to leverage its existing infrastructure while entering a new market segment with significant growth potential. The collaboration underscores Compass Minerals' commitment to supporting domestic supply chains and contributing to the broader energy transition goals.
Compass Minerals' Strategic Shift
As Compass Minerals International moves forward with this ambitious initiative, it stands at the forefront of responding to the growing needs of the battery minerals market. The establishment of Project Powder Hound™ not only signifies a diversification of its portfolio but also enhances its strategic relevance within the critical minerals industry.
