Constellation Energy Expands Role in Federal Clean Energy Supply
Constellation Energy Corporation, the largest producer of clean, emissions-free energy in the United States, enters a significant partnership with the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), securing over $1 billion in contracts to supply power to more than 13 federal agencies. Highlighting the importance of this agreement, the centerpiece is a landmark 10-year contract valued at $840 million, marking the largest procurement in GSA history. Under this contract, Constellation is set to deliver more than 1 million megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy annually starting in 2025. This supply will be partially derived from enhancements to Constellation’s nuclear plants, known as “uprates,” boosting the company’s capacity to meet growing energy demands while reinforcing the role of nuclear energy in the nation’s clean energy strategy.
CEO Joe Dominguez underscores the deal's significance amid increasing recognition of nuclear energy's potential in sustainable procurement. The agreement not only positions Constellation as a key player in the federal energy landscape but also aligns with broader corporate initiatives advocating for cleaner energy sources. By 2028, Constellation aims to add around 1,100 megawatts of clean energy, which is sufficient to power over one million homes. GSA Administrator Robin Carnahan emphasizes that this procurement ensures a reliable and cost-effective nuclear energy supply, protecting taxpayers from future price volatility and reinforcing the federal government's commitment to nuclear energy as a sustainable solution.
In addition to the power supply contract, Constellation secures a $172 million Energy Savings Performance Contract, aimed at enhancing energy efficiency at five GSA facilities. This initiative includes implementing energy-saving measures, such as LED lighting installations, which signify a substantial step toward a carbon-free energy future. As the federal government increasingly invests in reliable nuclear energy solutions, Constellation’s strategic path reaffirms its commitment to helping the nation transition toward an energy landscape that prioritizes sustainability and efficiency, positioning itself favorably for future growth.
In light of recent developments, Constellation also welcomes the U.S. Treasury Department's decision to enable existing nuclear plants to qualify for federal tax credits for clean hydrogen production under the Inflation Reduction Act. This new rule supports the company's ambitions in clean hydrogen technology, vital for achieving sustainable energy goals. As Constellation navigates these regulatory changes, it remains focused on its objective of attaining a 100% carbon-free generation by 2040, reinforcing its leadership role in the transition to a sustainable energy future.
