Darden shifts course for Bahama Breeze brand
Orlando-based Darden Restaurants says it is closing its Bahama Breeze chain after nearly 30 years, permanently shutting 14 of the brand’s 28 restaurants and converting the other 14 to different concepts in its portfolio. The company frames the move as a strategic redeployment of real estate based on site evaluations and broader priorities. Locations designated for permanent closure continue operating through April 5, while conversions are expected to take 12 to 18 months, with restaurants remaining open until any temporary remodel-related closures are required.
Redeploying Bahama Breeze properties across the portfolio
Darden describes the conversion sites as “great sites” for other brands, though it does not name which concepts will replace Bahama Breeze at specific addresses. Its portfolio includes Olive Garden, Yard House, Ruth’s Chris Steak House and Eddie V’s, among others, and most conversion projects are concentrated in Florida with additional conversions planned in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Permanent closures are spread across Delaware, Georgia, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington.
The company emphasizes workforce support as it reshapes its restaurant mix, saying its primary focus is placing as many affected team members as possible into roles across its chains where feasible. Darden presents the decision as part of a broader effort to optimize locations and brand mix for long-term profitability, reallocating capital and operating capacity toward concepts it considers better aligned with current consumer demand and site economics.
Industry context: consumer habits and cost pressures
The announcement comes amid broader industry shifts tied to changing consumer habits and persistent cost pressures that prompt chains to reduce menu complexity, close underperforming units or convert locations to higher-growth concepts. Casual-dining operators increasingly re-evaluate portfolios to concentrate on brands and formats that deliver stronger returns and more efficient operations.
Operational outlook and timing
Darden says conversions will proceed over the next 12 to 18 months and that impacted restaurants will remain open through remodels except when temporary closures are necessary. The company is conducting site-by-site evaluations to determine the best brand fits, signaling an active period of portfolio adjustment as it reallocates real estate and labor across its concepts.
