Designer Brands hires operations-focused finance chief to drive omnichannel execution
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Designer Brands appoints Sheamus Toal as executive vice president and chief financial officer, a move aimed at strengthening the retailer’s operational and financial execution across stores, digital platforms and supply chain, the company says in a Feb. 11 press release. Toal joins the Columbus-based footwear and apparel chain effective Feb. 16, 2026, bringing decades of finance and operations experience at multi-brand and omnichannel retailers.
CFO appointment sharpens focus on store fleet and digital integration
Designer Brands is positioning the new CFO to lead disciplined capital allocation, cost management and margin expansion while supporting execution of initiatives across its store fleet and digitally driven channels. Toal is expected to prioritize liquidity management and operational improvements that span merchandising, supply chain resilience and the integration of in-store and online customer experiences, areas the company highlights as central to near-term strategic priorities.
The appointment reflects a shift toward pairing financial stewardship with hands-on operational leadership. Toal’s recent tenure as chief operating officer and CFO at The Children’s Place, where he oversaw end-to-end operations and drove cost savings and earnings improvement, signals Designer Brands’ intent to marry finance and operations to boost profitability and customer-facing capabilities. Company executives say the CFO role will also enhance investor communications and support major initiatives such as store optimization and digitally enabled fulfillment.
Interim finance leader returns to accounting role
Mark Haley, who served as interim principal financial officer during the transition, resumes his full-time post as senior vice president, controller and principal accounting officer. The company notes Haley’s return preserves continuity in accounting controls and reporting as Toal assumes broader strategic responsibilities.
Toal’s retail track record underpins strategic aims
Toal’s background includes CFO and COO roles at large and mid-size retailers, and prior leadership at Saatva.com and New York & Company, where he navigated acquisitions, financings and public-company readiness. Designer Brands’ CEO Doug Howe says he is confident Toal’s combination of operational and financial expertise will be invaluable as the company pursues profitable growth and improves execution across its omnichannel business.
