Designer Brands names operations-focused CFO to steer omnichannel strategy
Chief financial officer appointment targets omnichannel execution
Designer Brands Inc. appoints Sheamus Toal as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, effective Feb. 16, 2026, the Columbus, Ohio-based footwear and accessories retailer says. The company frames the hire as a move to strengthen financial and operational leadership as it pursues profitable growth across its store fleet and digital platforms. Mark Haley, who served as interim principal financial officer during the transition, returns full time to his role as Senior Vice President, Controller and Principal Accounting Officer.
Toal joins from The Children's Place, where he serves as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer and oversees finance and end-to-end operations for a multi-brand public retailer. Designer Brands highlights his track record in strengthening liquidity, optimizing digitally driven business models and delivering cost savings and earnings improvement as directly relevant to its needs. Toal also brings prior experience as Executive Vice President and CFO of Saatva.com and more than a decade in senior finance and executive roles at New York & Company, including a long tenure as CFO and a period as CEO.
Company executives say Toal’s blend of financial expertise and operational leadership will be central to executing strategic initiatives across stores, e-commerce and supply chain. The appointment signals an emphasis on disciplined capital allocation, tighter cost management and margin expansion as Designer Brands seeks to integrate physical and digital channels and improve inventory and fulfillment efficiency. Management frames the hire as part of a multi-year effort to enhance investor communications and drive sustainable, profitable growth.
Leadership transition and continuity
Designer Brands keeps internal continuity by returning Mark Haley to his controller and accounting officer duties, providing continuity in accounting and reporting functions while the new CFO assumes broader operational responsibilities.
Strategic priorities beyond the finance role
The company says the CFO hire supports planned work across its store fleet, digital platforms and supply chain and will play a central role in acquisitions, capital raises and reorganizations if pursued. The move reflects broader retail industry trends toward combining financial discipline with operational transformation to compete in an increasingly omnichannel market.
