This significant improvement, which excludes prolonged outages caused by severe weather such as storms, results from the company’s extensive grid hardening initiatives designed to enhance infrastructure resilience amid Florida's dynamic climate. The strategic investments underscore DEF's commitment to delivering reliable energy services while ensuring customer safety, particularly during extreme weather events.
One of the cornerstone programs of this initiative involves upgrading approximately 60% of the company’s wooden transmission poles to more robust materials like concrete or steel. This upgrade is on track to be completed by 2028. The emphasis on sturdier infrastructure helps mitigate the risks posed by high winds and falling trees, common in Florida storms. Additionally, DEF has successfully moved nearly half of its distribution system underground. This underground placement protects electrical lines from debris and other weather-related disruptions, further decreasing the likelihood and duration of outages experienced by customers.
