Duke Energy's Green Source Advantage Program Drives Sustainability Initiatives in North Carolina
Duke Energy's Green Source Advantage Express (GSA Express) program demonstrates the strong demand for renewable energy solutions among large businesses in North Carolina. Launched as part of Duke’s commitment to sustainability, GSA Express allows organizations to subscribe to capacity from newly constructed renewable energy facilities within the company’s grid. This innovative framework enables businesses to match 100% of their annual electricity usage without relying on off-site generation. The program has gained traction with early adopters like Cisco, United States Cold Storage Inc., and Daimler Truck North America, all of which recognize the importance of integrating sustainable energy sources into their operational strategies.
As of the latest enrollment report, GSA Express has successfully subscribed and allocated a total of 177.3 megawatts (MW), with 87.3 MW in the Duke Energy Carolinas territory and 90 MW in Duke Energy Progress territory. This substantial uptake underscores the increasing interest among large corporations in reducing their carbon footprints and achieving sustainability goals. Duke Energy is also set to reserve 10% of additional capacity each year for new business customers, ensuring that the program remains accessible and appealing to a broader audience. The fourth quarter of 2026 will see any unallocated capacity made available, enhancing the program's viability in the long term.
The positive response to GSA Express is further highlighted by comments from pivotal stakeholders. Meghan Dewey, Duke Energy's senior vice president, notes that the program is pivotal for organizations striving to align operational practices with sustainability objectives. Similarly, Cisco's renewable energy program manager, Evan S. Brown, emphasizes how participation bolsters both sustainability efforts and operational reliability in key areas, such as the Research Triangle Park. Daimler Truck North America's COO, Jeff Allen, mirrors this sentiment, highlighting the partnership's significance in advancing their sustainability commitments and achieving long-term energy objectives. Overall, GSA Express illustrates how Duke Energy facilitates meaningful partnerships that help businesses engage in clean energy initiatives and exemplify sustainability leadership.
In addition to the GSA Express, Duke Energy has launched the 10-megawatt Ebbie Solar project in Marion, South Carolina. This initiative marks the state's first under the updated Green Source Advantage program and aims to support companies like the Schaeffler Group in offsetting significant portions of their energy consumption, thereby reducing operational carbon footprints. Schaeffler’s region facilities manager underlines the critical role of this collaboration in fulfilling their sustainability goals, ensuring that Duke Energy continues to innovate in creating flexible and customer-focused clean energy offerings.
Moreover, Duke Energy's Renewable Choice program has also surpassed its enrollment goals, driven by strong demand from commercial and industrial customers seeking renewable energy solutions. The combination of these projects underscores Duke Energy's commitment to meeting the growing energy needs of its business customers while promoting essential climate action through enhanced access to renewable resources.
