Huawei Digital Power Sets New Safety Standards in Energy Storage Technology
Huawei Digital Power achieves a significant milestone with its Commercial and Industrial Hybrid Cooling Grid Forming Energy Storage System (C&I GFM ESS), successfully passing an extreme ignition test conducted by TÜV Rheinland. This test, the first of its kind to evaluate an Energy Storage System (ESS) under the newly established UL 9540A:2025 standard, is pivotal in demonstrating the product's safety capabilities in high-risk scenarios. Conducted in a specialized national fire safety laboratory, the evaluation challenges the ESS through rigorous conditions, including a pack-level overcharge that induces simultaneous thermal runaway in 60 battery cells. This approach significantly escalates the complexity of the test compared to previous assessments, which often involved fewer cells.
The extreme testing conditions employed a fully charged state of charge (SOC) at 100% and utilized an open-door ignition method to enhance oxygen availability. Additionally, all fire suppression systems were deactivated, compelling the C&I GFM ESS to depend solely on its intrinsic safety design. Under these demanding circumstances, Huawei’s innovative five-level protection system proved effective. Key components include inter-cell thermal insulation to slow thermal runaway progression, an all-metal pack enclosure capable of withstanding temperatures exceeding 1500°C, and a sophisticated positive-pressure oxygen blocking system designed to redirect combustibles, ensuring that potential fire hazards are effectively managed.
The successful performance of Huawei's C&I GFM ESS under such extreme testing conditions not only underscores the robustness of its safety features but also establishes a new benchmark within the energy storage industry. By advancing technological standards in energy safety, Huawei Digital Power reiterates its commitment to providing reliable and efficient energy solutions tailored for commercial and industrial applications. This achievement positions Huawei as a leader in the energy storage market, reflecting its dedication to innovation and safety in the face of evolving energy demands.
In a related development, the energy storage sector continues to witness rapid advancements. Fox ESS, another key player in the industry, recently gained recognition as the top provider of residential energy storage systems across Europe, the UK, and Poland for the first half of 2025. This growth is attributed to their commitment to quality and customer-centric product design, emphasizing the increasing demand for robust energy solutions in both residential and commercial markets.
The focus on safety and efficiency in energy storage technology is more critical than ever. As companies like Huawei and Fox ESS lead the charge, the industry moves towards creating reliable systems that meet stringent safety standards while addressing the growing need for sustainable energy solutions.
