Revolutionizing Data Center Cooling: Flex's Innovative Liquid Cooling Technology
Flex, a prominent player in data center infrastructure solutions, unveils its cutting-edge rack-level liquid cooling technology at the Equinix Co-Innovation Facility (CIF) in Ashburn, Virginia. This advancement marks a pivotal step in addressing the escalating demands of artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) environments. By integrating single-phase direct liquid cooling (DLC) capabilities from its subsidiary, JetCool, into an Open Compute Project (OCP) ORv3 rack, Flex aims to significantly enhance energy efficiency while reducing water and power consumption.
The introduction of JetCool's SmartPlate System, particularly in conjunction with Dell PowerEdge R760 servers, showcases the effectiveness of closed-loop cooling systems. This innovative solution not only eliminates the need for external coolant distribution units but also achieves a remarkable 15% reduction in total IT power consumption. Furthermore, the DLC capabilities extend to Dell PowerEdge R660 systems, allowing for operation with coolant inlet temperatures reaching up to 70°C. This feature facilitates a staggering 90% decrease in water usage and a reduction of up to 50% in cooling power consumption when compared to conventional cooling methods.
In addition to these advancements, the deployment includes the SmartSense 6U Liquid-to-Liquid (L2L) CDU, which supports cooling demands of up to 300kW. This system is designed to seamlessly integrate with Equinix's secondary loop, ensuring full DLC operation. Rob Campbell, President of Flex's Communications, Enterprise, and Cloud Business, underscores the importance of this collaboration with Equinix, noting its potential to fundamentally transform the landscape of data center cooling and infrastructure. Flex's comprehensive portfolio effectively addresses the challenges associated with power, heat, and scalability, positioning the company as a leader in enhancing energy efficiency and performance in high-density computing environments.
In other developments, Flex continues to leverage its expertise in designing and building advanced data center solutions to meet the growing needs of clients in various industries. The company remains committed to fostering innovation and sustainability in data center operations, ensuring that its clients can effectively manage the increasing demands of modern computing technologies. As environmental concerns rise, Flex’s initiatives in liquid cooling technology reflect a proactive approach to creating more sustainable and efficient data center infrastructures.
