FMC's Rimisoxafen: Historic Dual Mode Herbicide Classification Enhances Crop Protection Against Resistant Weeds
- FMC's rimisoxafen receives a historic dual mode of action classification by HRAC, enhancing herbicide effectiveness against weeds.
- The herbicide effectively targets resistant weeds like palmer amaranth and waterhemp, supporting sustainable agriculture.
- FMC is set to submit regulatory dossiers for rimisoxafen in 2026, emphasizing innovation in crop protection solutions.
Innovative Herbicide Receives Historic Classification by HRAC
FMC Corporation announces a significant advancement in crop protection with the dual mode of action classification of rimisoxafen by the Herbicide Resistance Action Committee (HRAC). This milestone marks the first time HRAC has designated a herbicide as a dual mode of action product, placing rimisoxafen in Groups 12 and 32. The innovative herbicide works by simultaneously inhibiting two vital biochemical pathways in weeds: phytoene desaturase (PDS) and solanesyl diphosphate synthase (SDPS). This dual action mechanism enhances the herbicide's efficacy, making it substantially more challenging for weeds to develop resistance compared to single-mode herbicides.
FMC’s rimisoxafen demonstrates effectiveness against particularly troublesome weed species, such as palmer amaranth and waterhemp. Palmer amaranth is notorious for its resistance to multiple herbicide modes of action, creating significant economic burdens for farmers. By controlling these challenging and resistant broadleaf weeds, rimisoxafen offers an essential tool for crop protection, especially in high-stake crops like corn, soybean, cereals, pulses, and sunflower. The company emphasizes that the development of rimisoxafen reflects its continual dedication to innovation in agricultural chemistry, countering the growing threat of herbicide-resistant weeds.
The formulation of rimisoxafen is a product of FMC's research at the Stine Research Center and is further positioned as the third novel herbicide developed by the company for regulatory submission in recent years, following the advancements of Isoflex® active and Dodhylex™ active. As FMC prepares to submit regulatory dossiers for rimisoxafen in key markets in 2026, this breakthrough not only aims to empower farmers with a new weapon in their arsenal against resistant weeds but also underscores FMC’s commitment to sustainable agriculture through innovative active ingredients and technologies.
In addition to this groundbreaking classification, FMC’s executive vice president and chief technology officer, Seva Rostovtsev, points to the research backing rimisoxafen’s capability. He states that the historic classification solidifies the herbicide's potential for providing consistent control over weeds that threaten global agricultural productivity. This strategic breakthrough not only supports farmers in their quest to enhance crop yields but also aligns with FMC's broader goal of addressing food production challenges in a dynamically changing environment.
This dual mode classification sets a precedent for future innovations in the agricultural industry, reinforcing FMC's role as a leader in developing effective solutions for crop protection in the face of emerging challenges.
